Welcome to Yarn Basket, a knit & crochet shop located in the historic Hotel Stilwell in downtown Pittsburg, Kansas.  At this time I do not engage in internet sales but wanted to let you know what surrounds me by day. Just realized this page is outdated; I’ll try to get some new photos up soon.

mohair-cashwool-alpaca-with-twist-super-petalspunCashwool – a luscious lace weight merino from Trendsetter is near my computer.

Fino and Baby Twist from Alpaca With a Twist are right next to the Cashwool.

On the shelf above the Cashwool is the rayon super petalspun from Pisgah Yarn & Dyeing Co., Inc. I love this yarn for crocheting All Shawls.

Oh, and the mohair in black, red, white, pink, blue ~ mustn’t forget you!  Also Punch from Alpaca With a Twist in white, red, yellow and two shades of green.  Can just barely see the Euroflax Linen and Merlin on the extreme left edge.

summit-hill-tonalita-merinos-seiMerinos Sei, a soft, soft pure merino from Trendsetter is on the back wall where I can see it each time I come through the front door.  Merinos Dodici & Tonalita right there beside it.  On the left, 6 colors of Summit Hill superwash wool and a sample of Riverstone from Louet.

sock-yarn-part-of-threadStep, Trekking, and Saucon Sock ~ 3 sock yarns ~ are right over there where I walk past them numerous times each day.  Note to self:  need to call the gals at J-Knits and get some more of their Superwash Me Sock.

sock-yarn-threadHi crochet thread!  Do you really take up 2/3 of the space on one side of that center display unit?  A mix of Aunt Lydia’s in sizes 3, 5 & 10 and America’s Best Crochet Cotton in size 10 with two colors in size 20.  ok, Dazzling Diamonds, quit trying to seduce me away from my work.

peaches-cremePeaches & Crème cotton ~ currently about 50 colors in the small balls and about half a dozen colors on cones over in that corner.  Sure wish I could get all 126 colors they offer!

(Caron Simply Soft in 26 colors sort of hiding from me over near the Little LeHigh and Little LeHigh Pebbles and just to the left of the Peaches & Creme.)

nature-spun-burly-spunNature Spun and Burly Spun from Brown Sheep, Bear Creek from Kraemer, and Mauch Chunky from Kraemer.

needles-hooksHmmm, I need to update my photos; the Addis and HiyaHiyas are now behind me on the wall with the Susan Bates crochet hooks, steelite hooks, and miscellaneous notions over on the north side of the room.

Books and magazines scattered all around the place.

Ooh, your shop sounds lovely! When can we see pictures?

I have actually looked for your store and couldn’t find it in Pittsburg. I live about 15 minutes away and wasn’t sure if everyone is able to just come in and look around….

The shop is located in the Hotel Stilwell at the northwest corner of 7th & Broadway, between the congressional office and Ray’s Barber Shop; on the other side of the street in the same block Sears is in. I’m there Tuesday – Friday from about 10:00 to 5:00, Thursday evenings from about 6:00 – 6:45 or 8:00 dpending on whether anyone shows up to crochet with me, and Saturdays from 9:00 – 2:00. Occasionally I have to make a quick run to the post office or bank or something but I try to never be gone during the day for more than 15 minutes. I’m also there some Monday mornings for a while but always call first if you plan a Monday visit to Pittsburg.

I hear you have Caron Simply Soft…do you have any of their “heather” series? I’m working a man-sized soft and cuddly using 3 of their “heather” colors and it is getting hard to find~! Caron isn’t hard to find but the 3 colors I’m using seem to be. I need Truffle, Deep Teal and Forest. ???

  6. 7 yarnbasket July 22, 2009 at 6:38 am

I don’t have them in stock but my supplier has the Deep Teal and Truffle so I can order them for you. Forest must be a discontinued color – my supplier doesn’t have it and it is no long listed on the Caron website. Let me know if you want me to order the two colors available.
